  • Talent Search FAQ's
  • In the Talent Search can I sing with a track or do I have to sing with the band?
It’s best if you sing with the band. Several reasons for this.
    # 1. If everyone sings with the band except one or two the judges may wonder why you didn’t sing with the band and may give you a lower score.
#2. If you always sing with a track, you’ll never learn how to sing with the live band.
#3. It requires more experience and practice to sing with the band.
#4. It’s more fun to sing with the band because you build a repoire with them and they with you.
#5. People pay $11 to get in to see the show and it’s very boring to just sit and watch people sing Karaoke.
#6. For many singers and musicians; it forces them to get out of their comfort zone and do something they haven’t done before. I believe this is good for them …whether they feel uncomfortable or not is unimportant…they’ll get over that. They are developing a valuable skill, that after they learn it, they appreciate it VERY much.
    # 7. No one EVER sings at the Grand Ole Opry with a track.

  • How would a person go about being a guest on the Kentucky Opry Show?
First, if they got into the Talent Search, or the Sing-A-Like Contest, and won… that would get them several guest appearances. If they are an older country music star, or if they are a big name gospel group.
The Opry is ALWAYS looking for good talent. Good singers are plentiful, but The Opry is looking for guests that are uncommon.
The Opry is looking for something unique or rare. For instance… a girl singer that can also play sax or harmonica. Guys that can sing, play guitar, and play fiddle, Cloggers, Kids that can sing and play an instrument of any kind.
  • When did the Kentucky Opry get started?
    Spring of 1988.(see Clay’s book)
  • How did the Opry get started? Clay Campbell began playing music in 1963. He traded a saddle and pig for his first guitar. After performing in clubs and bars for 17 years he became a Christian and married Barbie Williams from the Minneapolis Minnesota area and began a new life. In 1988 they visited the Kentucky Lake area and saw there were no music shows here and decided then and there that Kentucky Lake would be a great place to raise their three boys and build a music show. The Kentucky is now in it's 20th season.
